Empowering the mature mind: 5 tips to give boost to senior brains

Old age brings wisdom from years of experience, however, it also brings with it diminished brain agility, memory, and functionality. Over the years, scientists have been trying to find ways to ensure that the wisdom in seniors is shared for more years. There are now things seniors can do to prevent their brains from aging too quickly.

  1. Morning routine

You have always considered yourself as a night owl. You always wake up as late as you possibly can, skip breakfast and rush straight to work. Throughout your day, you always feel like you are trying to catch up with everyone else. The first thing you have to do is to stop thinking that you are a night owl. Teach yourself to sleep early and rise early, after all, the early bird catches the warm. Create a routine with the time you have before you go to work. For instance, you may wake up and spend a  couple of minutes meditating then brush, bathe, take breakfast and leave the house. You may also want to incorporate some time to listen to your favorite motivational podcast, read a newspaper and even exercise.

  1. Exercise routine

Well, an exercise routine is not just about losing weight, it is also about creating happiness and making your life more fulfilling.  Of course, there is also the fact that regular exercises help you combat heart conditions and diseases. Also, exercises help your brain by secreting a chemical known as serotonin. Serotonin is also called the happiness hormone because it sends a message to the brain that you are happy and satisfied.  In turn, your body gets more energy. The feeling of fulfillment also allows you to have better memory and concentration.

  1. Sleep routine

Researchers have shown that a great sleeping routine has more benefits than just making you feel rested. Getting quality sleep everyday allows you to improve your concentration, energy levels, mood and your memory. It is also a great way to help you increase your lifespan, allow you to control your weight and boost your immunity.

However, with a good rhythm, it is easy to get your body used to a sleep routine that will allow you to fall asleep and wake up around the same time each day. This way, you will allow your circadian rhythm to work optimally. The circadian rhythm allows your body to release hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones prepare your body to remain active, and ready from the time the alarm clock goes off. Consistency will also allow you to wake up the same time every day. Without a regular sleeping routine, there are times that the alarm will go off and your body is not ready. You will end up groggy throughout the day. You will barely remember anything.

  1. Deep breathing techniques and healthy eating

Fight or flight a stress response that your body deals with when faced with a stressful situation. Stressful situations are all around up and especially for you who wants to have a better, happier life and have to make some tough decisions. While this response is a great survival skill, it can be problematic when it is provoked by normal day to day activities such as traffic jams and lack of money.

Deep breathing is a great way to deal with anxiety and day-to-day stresses. It allows you to lower your blood pressure and improve circulation to your brain thus boosting concentration and better memory. Stress is one of the reasons seniors barely remember simple things. When if you are asking, are there any good nursing homes near me? It is recommended that you choose one that allows deep breathing and promote balanced diets.

  1. Self-journaling routine and playing games

Keeping a diary is faced with a lot of skepticism from most people. People assume that keeping a journal does not have any value.  Keeping a journal can help improve your IQ. Maintaining a journal helps you explore languages and increase your natural urge to want to learn new words. As you might already know, a great measure of intelligence is vocabulary. Learning and playing game have been know as ways to stimulate the brain. When you keep learning new things, your brain will strive to remember the things learnt. Thus boosting your concentration and memory.
